This album is a good buy if you're an established Rockabilly, Psychobilly, or Horror-Punk fan. The quality is pretty great, probably due to the fact that this cd was mastered by Dan Precision, the same guy that worked with some of my favorite local bands back in the day in Chicago. So I came into the cd with some moderately high hopes, and sad to say, I was moderately dissappointed.
Scary Larry's voice ranges from Danzig-esque ghoulish wailing to throaty yells, mostly the wailing. Joey Gravetone's guitar riffs would be well at home within the soundtrack of From Dusk Till Dawn or another similar badass horror/western movie, the songs "It's Been A Long Time" and "Seven Days" especially. The rhythm section doesn't really stand out much to me. Don't buy this cd hoping for completely balls-out, Demented-Are-Go-style songs. There are a lot of times where speed and intensity take a backseat to theatrics and melodic tempos. That can be a good or bad thing depending on your tastes. The lyrics definitely have their moments, but on the other hand can feel watered-down and familiar. Also, the insert doesn't have the lyrics printed on it which is kind of a pet peeve of mine, but the vocals aren't that hard to understand.
While Dig It! doesn't really break any new ground in the psychobilly genre, it's a solid release that I can safely say is one of the better psychobilly albums I've ever listened to. Misfits fans will feel right at home. I give The Gravetones Dig It! a 6 out of 10.
